The Kootenai Tribe of Idaho was recently awarded funds from the EPA (Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling EPA-I-OLEM-ORCR-23-07) to reduce emissions that contribute to climate change by developing and implementing a plan to encourage environmentally friendly material management through recycling and composting.

Some Tribal Citizens are participating in our composting project using the Reencle in home composters. The composter uses a biome to turn food waste into compost. The finished product will be used in gardens and community spaces.

On a larger scale, the Tribe is working with a partner to develop a composting program that will divert food waste from Bonner and Boundary County landfills. The project will use an in-vessel composter to produce a high quality compost product.
